The Protection of Drea Kelly

Like everyone, I watched the Gayle King interview with R. Kelly. And though I too wanted to hear what he had to say about the allegations, there was something else he said that struck me. Though he admitted to some wrongdoing, but nothing criminal, he said that the allegations were a result of those relationships not working out. Immediately when he said that, I saw something that I’d never seen before, and that’s marriage protects. But allow me to explain.

The Protection of Marriage

When you have multiple partners, you run the risk of incurring emotional damage, becoming a victim of domestic violence, contracting a sexually transmitted disease, experiencing the pain of heartbreak, or even worse - criminal charges.”

Marriage protects. And one of the reasons it does is because it protects you from the dangers that can occur from being in multiple relationships. When you have multiple partners, you run the risk of incurring emotional damage, becoming a victim of domestic violence, contracting a sexually transmitted disease, experiencing the pain of heartbreak, or even worse - criminal charges. Had he stayed married to Drea - and been faithful to HER - none of this would have happened. 1 Corinthians 7:1,2 says, ‘It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, BECAUSE OF SEXUAL IMMORALITY, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.’ Because of sexual immorality, he is in this situation. Because he didn’t stay with his OWN WIFE, he is now facing multiple criminal charges. Genesis 2:18 says, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper (helpmeet) comparable to him.’ This lets us know that it was never God’s intent for men to be sexually immoral, or to be alone, and thus may explain why men feel the need to go in and out of relationships, and/or have multiple sex partners. Now don’t get me wrong. This is in no way excusing their promiscuity. I cite this only because it provides a biblical explanation for their behavior. It was never God’s intent for men, or women, to be promiscuous or go from one relationship to the other. God created one helpmeet/helper for man.

The Protection of Drea

And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him…and the Lord God…took one of [Adam’s] ribs…and…made [it] into a woman (Adam’s wife)…’ (Genesis 2:18,22)

Helpmeet (helper) in Hebrew means ‘to aid, surround and protect’. Drea Kelly was created for R. Kelly. That was HIS helper. She was the woman God created that was ‘comparable to him.’ How do I know? I don’t for certain. But in an interview, she expressed that she was. Along with detailing the good times of their relationship, she cited landmarks in his career that she attributed to their marriage. She also went on to say that when they were doing well as a couple, his career flourished. Which means, in a sense, she was his inspiration. Her inspiration helped him to write chart-topping, award-winning songs. But because of his sexual immorality, along with his verbal and physical abuse, when they divorced, he lost not only his help, but his protection.

While faithfully married to Drea, he was safe from the dangers that come with multiple sex partners; no matter the age. Yet, he walked away from his protection, and as a result, got into this situation. But allow me to say this. I am in no way blaming his accusers. Not in the least. But had he remained faithful to Drea, neither they nor he would be facing this today. Which means, all of this could have been avoided had he stayed under the protection of the vows he made to God - and Drea. Now he stands to lose his family, legacy, and his freedom as a result. And though marriage isn’t popular today, one thing’s for certain: there’s protection in staying faithfully married to the person God created for you.

Pray this with me: Heavenly Father, I thank You for my (future) husband or wife and the protection that exists within our vows. I thank You that because You created one person for me, I don’t have to experience the pain that R. Kelly is facing. And Lord, though I don’t agree nor know for certain if what he’s accused of is true, one thing I do know, and that’s I am not his judge; You are. So like You’ve forgiven me for all the dirt I’ve done, I ask that You’d give him the gift of repentance. Help him to get his life right with You. Help his accusers too Lord. And Lord, this has to be hard on Drea and their children. So I ask that You’d cover them throughout this ordeal. In Jesus’ name.
